The territory of present-day Ukraine has been inhabited by various groups and civilizations for thousands of years. However, the modern nation-state of Ukraine emerged only in the 20th century.

In 1917, following the Russian Revolution, Ukraine declared independence from the Russian Empire. However, this was short-lived, as the Soviet Union invaded Ukraine and annexed it in 1922. Ukraine became one of the constituent republics of the Soviet Union, and remained so until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine declared independence once again on August 24, 1991. Since then, Ukraine has been a sovereign nation, with its own government, constitution, and elected leaders.

Throughout its history, Ukraine has been ruled by various groups and individuals, including the Kievan Rus, Mongols, Lithuanians, Poles, and Russians, among others. The country has also had periods of independence and self-rule, as well as periods of foreign domination and occupation. Today, Ukraine is a democratic republic, with a president and a parliament elected by the people.
